Receiving spam calls and SMS has become a part of our everyday lives. One widely used app to overcome the agonising ringing is Truecaller. This detects spam calls/SMS by marking it as per user suggestions. Basically, it collects the contact data of it’s users and stores in it’s database, so as to enable others to identifying who the unknown caller is. (hands down it has access to all your contacts).
So recently, many users in India got a strange notification that their registration for UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is initiated and in some cases it was automatically registered. This sparked an outrage among users stating unauthorised access to sensitive banking information.

Did Truecaller Respond? : Yes, Truecaller was quick to come up with a statement stating that their latest update had a bug which initiated the UPI registration and they had rolledback the update. (a bug which auto registers UPI? Strange)

Truecaller’s Official Statement
Even though Truecaller stated that it is been rolled back, many users are still not de-registered.
To conclude, this act by Truecaller seems intentional as the action was automatic and there was not even a push notification for the authorisation. So, if you feel skeptical about it’s privacy and yet want to use Truecaller, try this setting so that your privacy is quite a bit safeguarded.
